We would all like to think that dress shops would welcome you with open arms, a nice glass of wine and be ready to serve but unfortunately shops like this are few and far between. More brides complain about dress shops that any other wedding business.

Choose your dress shop well, you are going to be spending quite a bit of money there so they should make you feel special. It is a good idea to call your dress shop in advance and make an appointment, this will get the attention you deserve.

• Don’t get disheartened if the dress you love doesn’t suit you. Ask the assistant to pick out something they think will suit your shape. It is often the dress you least like on the hanger that looks beautiful on.
• Choose dresses that show off your good points and hide your bad ones.
• Set a budget before you go. Dresses can cost the earth so it is a good idea to set a budget.
• Take someone with you who will be honest. I have been to many bridal shops and seen brides trying on dresses that look awful but the people they have with them say they look beautiful so as not to hurt their feelings. You want to look perfect so take someone who will be honest with you.
• Take you time. Try lots of dresses on and think about it before you order one.
• Wear big underwear and a strapless bra for the fittings.
